Hello and welcome to the Modern Languages Department. In this department, we encourage you to aim for linguistic competence, creativity and intercultural awareness, using the most modern technologies for language teaching.

Courses
KS3
From year 7 to year 9 we aim to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in the three languages taught in the department - French, German and Spanish. Pupils learn to use linguistic knowledge and skills to understand and communicate effectively in the language they learn. They are shown how language works, how to use familiar language for new purposes and in new contexts, to recognize that languages differ but may share common grammatical, syntactical, lexical or even semantic features. They are encouraged to use their imagination to express thoughts, ideas, experiences and feelings. But most importantly they are guided, through language acquisition, to appreciate the richness and diversity of other cultures. Students who demonstrate a flair for languages are given an option of a second language and take a GCSE (Foundation) at the end of year 9. In all three languages taught we have Foreign Language Assistants who bring a fresh cultural perspective to language learning and help raise the level of performance in oral examinations.
KS4
At Forest Hill we follow the WJEC full course specifications in GCSE French, German and Spanish. We aim to give modern foreign language students the opportunities to develop the ability to communicate effectively through both the spoken and written word, to enhance their application of grammar in the target language and provide a suitable foundation for further study and/or practical use of the modern foreign language. Pupils are encouraged to take GCSE examinations in other languages within the curriculum which are not formally taught at Forest Hill but which the pupils have previously acquired eg. Chinese, Portuguese, etc. In all three languages taught we have Foreign Language Assistants who bring a fresh cultural perspective to language learning and help raise the level of performance in oral examinations.
KS5
At the moment we teach French and German courses in the Modern Languages department at AS/A Levels. The syllabus is designed to meet the specification for the WJEC GCE Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced Level (A2) qualifications and the subject criteria for AS/A Level French and German as issued by the board. Our syllabus for AS and A Level aims to encourage students to:
- develop an interest in, and enthusiasm for, language learning
- provide a sufficient basis for the further study of languages at degree level or equivalent.
