FEBRUARY 2011 UPDATE
This term, year 12 and 13 art students have been working on an intergenerational art project with elders from The Grove Centre in Sydenham. The students’ theme, Reveal/Conceal, enabled them to explore skin and time-marked changes. The art activities were designed to stimulate both age groups, fostering conversation and a mutual exchange of ideas. For the final week, the elders visited FHS art department for a clay workshop. This proved exciting for the elders as many, “hadn’t sat in a classroom for eighty years!”. The project lasted for three weeks and has been a wonderful experience for the students and elders. It has allowed all participants to gain insight into each other’s lives and has challenged stereotypes, creating a more understanding and stronger community. To celebrate this project, there will be an exhibition of all participants’ art work at the Stephen Lawrence Centre in April, part of Lewisham’s first ever Intergenerational Festival.
